Minister visits new Bulmers plant

Irish Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley TD, was recently presented with details on the environmental benefits of one of the world’s first CarbonNeutral building envelopes, which has been supplied by Euroclad at the new Bulmers plant in Clonmel.

Bulmers Plant Euroclad’s cladding and mineral-cored composite systems were chosen for the roof and walls, as well as the internal firewalls as they met both Bulmers’ and John M Allen Architects’ requirements, supplying a non-combustible*.mineral wool insulation cored complete building envelope solution that provides cradle to grave carbon neutrality. Euroclad’s systems using Corus Colorcoat® prefinished steel are assessed and approved under the Confidex Sustain™ system, which enables building envelopes supplied by Euroclad to offer carbon neutrality through socially responsible carbon offsetting schemes. “We are proud to have played a major role in the project right from the outset and that by using our systems, Bulmers has achieved the first Carbon Neutral metal clad building to be announced in Ireland “ said Michael Roche, Euroclad Director.

The new building houses three high-speed bottling lines and uses the first CarbonNeutral steel cladding system in Ireland and one of the few in existence in the world. The building has been developed under phase one of Bulmers’ €200m Capital Investment Programme. Brendan McGuinness, Managing Director of Bulmers said that implementing Corus Confidex Sustain™ was the most suitable option for the company, which operates a stringent environmental policy. “This system is a great fit with the environmental ethos of Bulmers and supports our efforts to constantly improve our systems, across the entire operational and production process. “ said Mr McGuinness.

Corus ConfidexCorus includes Euroclad in the Confidex Sustain™ System and, for every 1kg of CO2 emitted by the pre-finished steel, cladding, fixings and insulation, Corus will off-set 1kg in climate friendly projects overseas. Corus, which is one of Europe’s largest steel producers, works with the leading climate change company, The CarbonNeutral Company, to ensure that the Confidex Sustain™ System provides a robust and fully traceable and auditable environmentally sustainable process.

Bulmers has undergone a period of development and expansion over the past two years, which has resulted in an increase in production and capacity at the plant in Clonmel. Environmental responsibility is central to this development. . The new building is energy-efficient on a number of different levels: It has high levels of insulation and is consequently a warm building, requiring low levels of heating – something not always associated with a bottling hall. It is heated by natural gas, which has not yet been used due to the high standards of insulation. The interior lighting is high frequency, low energy lighting, providing a working light equal to daylight. This creates a better work atmosphere and adds to the efficiency of the operation.
