Standingseam Roof System

Low Pitched

What is a standing seam roof system? Standing seam systems involve the ‘zipping up’ of a rolled side lap over supporting halters.

The sheet side laps are closed using a Mechanical Seaming Tool to rollform the ‘Fixed Seam Overlap Radius’, creating attachment to the halter but still allowing free movement under thermal expansion. The Standing Seam outer sheet can be produced in various metals and finishes, Aluminium is the most cost effective.

There are no external penetrations of the outer sheet required and no end laps required as sheet lengths are not restricted due to site production of the profile. Because of the metal on metal zipped up sidelap detail, the outer sheet effectively breathes, therefore making the system also suitable for refurbishment and removing the need for a breather membrane or building paper.

The most commonly used construction is the over - purlin twin skin liner construction. The metal liner provides good aesthetic quality, is versatile and cost effective and can be used as a vapour control. Systems using a Structural Deck are also common, where purlins are eliminated from the construction. The finished roof system is low maintenance.

Curved

Specifiers and clients demand more design flexibility. Standing seam can be used to achieve a whole range of curves from large barrel vaults to tight radius details at the eaves or even covered walkways and canopies. The sheets can be formed into sinusoidal or waveform or even multiple curves in single length sheets using CNC production techniques. Standing seam systems offer complete visual freedom and can be tailored for each design.

Colors

Various colour coatings are available for the aluminium material – ARS & PVDF. PVDF, (polyvinylidene Fluoride) coatings were developed over 30 years ago, the surface finish is smooth with a decorative finish expectancy of 25 years This comprises a minimum of 70% PVF2 resin and a maximum of 30% acrylic. It is very durable, giving excellent flexibility and chemical resistance combined with the highest possible performance regarding gloss retention, chalking and colour change. ARS coating gives slightly less expectancy of 20 years and has a rough surface finish achieved through its extremely tough construction based on polyester or polyurethane resin reinforced with polyamide. Any change in appearance caused by prolonged exposure to the elements will be uniform along any elevation, even at the cut edges.

Tapered

Standing Seam can also be rollformed Tapered along their lengths. Tapered sheets fitted together or next to a straight sheet, can be used to create Curve shapes ‘On Plan’ The minimum sheet width possible is 150mm. The larger width dimension we keep to a maximum of 400mm to restrict wind uplift.

Green

A new concept in Roofing – Green Roofs can be achieved using a standing seam system as a robust component of the system. Traditionally single ply sheets were used as a base for the green roof matt. Aluminium standing seam sheet offer the ability to enable the laying of larger roof areas with out the high risk of leaks caused during the installation of the soil and clay system over membrane. Extensive green roofs can be subdivided into a range of different systems dependent upon the composition and depth of the substrate and on the plant species used.

The essential benefits of extensive green roofs are the following:

- Visually attractive with a range of flower and foliage effects.
- Low maintenance with little or no artificial irrigation requirement.
- Improved rainwater management. Volume and rate of rainwater run off from the roof is reduced dramatically.
- Improved building thermal performance. The building is insulated from heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer.
- Reduction in sound transmission through the roof.
- Improvement of air quality by removal of carbon dioxide, release of oxygen and water vapour, deposition of particulate pollutants, and absorption of organic volatiles.
- Reduction of the 'urban heat island effect'. & Provision of habitat for wildlife.
